ADIOS MOMO

Directed by Leonardo Ricagni

Uruguay, 2005, 100 min.

This uplifting film follows Obdulio, an illiterate 11-year-old Afro-Uruguayan boy, who lives with his grandmother and two young sisters, selling newspapers on the street for a living. His life is transformed when he meets the night watchman at the local newspaper whom he discovers is the charismatic magical “Maestro.” The night watchman not only teaches Obdulio to read and write but introduces him to the real meaning of life through the lyrics of the Murgas (a troupe of acting singers) during the Uruguayan Carnival. With a poetic nod to “magic realism” and the films of Federico Fellini, Leonardo Ricagni uses the carnival atmosphere to create a magical world in which all things are possible. In Spanish with English subtitles.
